      It is important to emphasize to all persons who have been charged with a crime to recognize that it is unwise to attempt to represent oneself or to attempt to talk themselves out of the accusations they are facing when dealing with law enforcement. Almost without exception, the act of making statements, admissions or formal confessions result in a reduction of the prospect for a more satisfactory and less damaging result in a criminal case. For the most part, law enforcement officers are entitled to use their skills, education and experience in an effort to persuade an individual that they would be better off talking to police rather than exercising their constitutional rights to demand an attorney be present before any further questioning takes place. Often during the earliest part of a criminal investigation, when emotions are running their highest, a person accused is in his or her most vulnerable condition. This is not the time to act as your own defense lawyer. This is the time to ask for a professional to be at your side before you take any additional steps which could irrevocably damage your chances, or dramatically worsen the ultimate result.
